My re-writing and revision phase is my favorite. People claim writing the story is the best part. Revisions and re-writes is when my stories come out. Rough drafts are just for me to get the story down, which is often the worse part sometimes. I may drag my feet around with certain chapters and scenes. Often those scenes are written as skeletons until I can come back at a later date and fix them.
Granted, my draft 2, is just me going through the story smooth it out for printing so then I can re-read and mark changes and put down notes. I need it to make sense first.
Outstanding model and description for rewriting and revising.
One of the biggest challenges I have in rewriting, especially when completing these “passes” on character, plot, theme, etc is staying disciplined enough with each change draft on which you’re focused. Doing those broad passes over 90K words takes a ton of discipline to not accidentally swim in other lanes, esp for those first 3 (drafts 2-4).
Love this post though. I’ll definitely use this as a reminder for where I should be in my rewrite plan.
My story develops through each edit and re-write, I discover characters who need more space and others that can fade into the background. I’m always amazed when I speak to writers who feel that two or three drafts/edits is enough as for me that would be doing my novel a disservice!
I strongly dislike rewriting 😅 it seems like such a mountain, especially when I need to change big chunks such as plot-related things (for example because my character has a different personality than I initially thought). I feel so much resistance and my initial reaction is to shelve the story..I’m still figuring things out though (and recently revised my first story!)
Thanks for sharing! I love the process you've outlined. I do find it hard, though, to not overlap in steps on the ladder .🪜 For example, working on character development in step two may mean rewriting part of the plot which is step three. But I do like the way the process shows you all the mail focal points to tackle at some point or another during draft revisions. I also personally self-edit as I go, though I know it's best left to the end stages. I just can't not correct an obvious typo, haha, even if it ends up being deleted later on.
Woah, great process! Super cool to see how you break down the drafts, thank you for sharing! I usually lump them all together, but I have to say that going from draft one to draft two is my favorite part of writing! Similarly to how you say draft one is a lump of clay, my first draft is like opening a brand new Lego set and dumping all the pieces out at once before you open the instructions. Draft two is picking each piece out and putting it where it belongs in the build, hehehe.
