This is such a good post. After the whole Meta debacle I had a chat with a lawyer at my arts association & turns out I did everything I could have done to stop it. It hasn't helped but knowing I did everything I could helped me feeling at least a bit at ease. Also, when it comes to blocking scraping on websites, my website is on Squarespace & they have a part in the settings where you can tap for AI bot scraping ti be blocked & they will implement it in your code. Didn't know about the right clicking thing yet, time to look into that.
Im glad you chatted to a legal person about it. The sad fact is that we cannot always do a lot individually, but I am really hoping that our combined voices can eventually make an impact 🩵🩷💜
Here's to hoping indeed & quiet honestly, part of me expected companies such as Meta to sink this low because their track record speaks for itself. What scares me more is all the comments I see from people on places like Youtube & TikTok (mostly those apps & way less on Instagram) about how they try to justify their pirating behavior & twist in all kinds of angles to do so. Comments like "Yes it's unfortunate for indie authors to be caught as collaterol damage in this." - The whole mentality of people just blows my mind lately 🤯.
I know! I find it incredibly disheartening when I see booktockers and bookstagrammers defending pirated books! Do they realise that they are endangering the very industry they claim to support? That without them buying books their favourite authors will stop writing? It boggles the mind 😬
It is mind boggling! I'm afraid those people won't learn until it's too late. It's about time that people start to realize that a world without artists is a very cold & empty world (engineers are also artists in their own respective ways & so many more jobs that taje creative & out of the box thinking).
I 💯 agree! One of the things I like about the company I work at is that even though we are a tech company there is a lot of research being done into sustainability and the scepticism around AI is huge. We deal in infrastructure and security and honestly, the fact that AI is just out there for anyone to use but we are only really just understanding how to secure it and use it ethically is a bit crazy… Pandora’s box is well and truly open and the next decade is going to be about everyone trying to get their arms around it. AI isn’t truly intelligent though, it’s just a machine learning tool, but it can handle big data in such a way that is very powerful. I really wish there were some immediate protections for writers intellectual property and clear guidelines for the publishing industry on what constitutes as your own ‘work’ so that we can protect creatives before it’s too late.
I see the program as just a program, it does what it's told to do. But it seems the people telling it what to do are not nice people (keeping it to friendly words). I sort of see AI as a child & currently that child is taught/has been taught that stealing is okay & without consequences for them. Even if they decide to change little bits and then give it away or selling it again. These are my views though. Unfortunately the rules & regelations come after it has been implemented.
This was really helpful, beyond helpful actually. I will definitely be using this information in the future, and currently with the book I already have self-published. Thank you so much for going ahead and sharing all of this. Awesome post.
